Fiberglass Resins and Gelcoats

HomeFiberglass Resins and Gelcoats
  • Air Dry is used when to turn your unwaxed resin in to waxed for your final top coat. If you only need one jug of resin or gelcoat and you plan to do multiple layers, then you need this as an additive for that last layer. It contains parrifin wax suspended in styrene solvent. The wax rises to the surface as the material cures and seals the surface from oxygen. Resin will only cure in the absence of oxygen so this is needed for the top layer. If it is not used the top layer will feel sticky (especially in the heat).

Styrene is commonly used to thin down polyester resins and gelgoats
  • MEKP is composed of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, a catalyst, added to polyester and vinyl resins. When MEKP is mixed with the resin, the resulting chemical reaction causes heat to build up and cure or harden the resin.
  • A general purpose polyester (fiberglass) resin. Our resins are purchased direct from major reputable suppliers and are consistent in quality and performance. Unwaxed resin remains a bit tacky on the side exposed to air. This is fine when adding more layers as you avoid sanding. Air Dry additive can be added to unwaxed resin to make it waxed. Requires 1-2% (or about 5-10 drops per oz) MEKP catalsyt. (sold separate) Need larger size? 5 gal pails and 50 gal Drums as available as well. contact sales@plasticworld.ca for more info.
  • Vinylester Resin
